#13: Spring Reset: How to Reinvent Yourself

For today's episode, I wanted to talk about taking a spring reset and diving deeper into how you can reinvent yourself. I feel this is a great time to reinvent yourself, being that it's spring. There's always a renewal and freshness this time of year, especially if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, which is a great time to restart.

It's a time of year that I really like to do spring cleaning and not only spring cleaning for the actual physical clutter of the house, but for a reinvention of the self. It also means cleaning in other ways and really resetting yourself. It's a great time to reset your energy, to take stock of where you are since the beginning of the year. We're now finished with first quarter and entering second quarter. If you've been wanting to take a look at things in a deeper or different way, then this could be a great time to do it.

So for today's episode, I'm talking about how to reinvent yourself. And I wanted to share a few different areas of things that I always think about for reinventing yourself in case one or more of these areas are helpful to you as you're going through your process and for wherever you are right now, whether you're looking at things related to your job or your business or something in your life.

How to Reinvent Yourself: Decluttering Your Space, Mind and Body

So the first area that I wanted to talk about is decluttering. This can be the physical decluttering, like I mentioned, cleaning the garage or cleaning a space in your home in some way. And it can also be cleaning of non physical spaces, so things like your mind and your body. These are additional ways that you can have a reset and reinvent yourself.

If we start with belongings in the physical space, there are areas that you can look at:

  • What are things that are old, that you haven't used in a while, that you feel complete or finished with in some way?

  • Can you remove these items?

  • Can you get rid of them?

  • Can you donate those things or recycle them in some way, so that they're not taking up space and energy in your house?

I find that physical decluttering is such a great process. Again, especially in spring when the weather is changing and things seem brighter and more open. Let's get rid of the things that have been sitting stagnant for a while. That's one way is you can look at the things that are physically in your space.

Then you can also look at those non physical things. Mind and body are two that come to mind for me.

For your mind:

  • What are the thoughts that you have running through your mind?

  • Do you want a mental reset in some way?

  • What are those negative thought patterns, and how can you shift them to something positive?

I would say to pick one area, one negative thought pattern that you see, and come up with a mantra or a phrase that you can replace it with. So that you can have something more positive or more encouraging in your life. So if you are someone that says “I'm always spinning my wheels and overthinking” and you're tired of doing that, you can maybe create an affirmation for yourself that is more encouraging to say, “Okay, I don't know this yet, but I'm going to find out.” Or “I'm not stuck. Every action brings clarity and forward momentum.”

You can choose a different phrase to get your mind shifting to something different. So that's a way to reset and reinvent yourself through your mind.

For the body you could look at:

  • What type of food are you taking in?

  • What type of information are you taking in?

  • How is that settling in your system?

  • Do you need some kind of reset in that way?

And I don't mean you have to do a cleanse or something like that, although you can if you want to. But I'm speaking more about, can you pay attention and be more mindful to what are you intaking, and are you are you feeling that it's time to shift things a little bit?

I know here in France, we eat foods that are very local. So we're always shopping at the local markets, and we really only have access to fruits and vegetables that are in season. It's something that I noticed when we moved from The US is very different because in The US, you can go to the supermarket and any time of the year get strawberries, for example. And here, the first strawberries just hit the market because now strawberry season is starting. And so all winter, we could really only eat more of those, let's say, winter root vegetables. And I told my husband the other day, I said, I'm really tired of the winter vegetables. I'm really excited for berries and more tomatoes and just all kinds of vegetables and things that we didn't have access to as much in the winter. So that's another way that you could look at it is, is your body ready for something different? Are you looking for a change in your diet in some way? And will that refuel you and kind of shift your energy and take you in a new direction?

Those are some of the decluttering ideas that I wanted to mention. Belongings, mind, and body. You can choose what seems most interesting to you or most helpful to you right now, what you feel most called to.

3 ways to have a spring reset how to reinvent yourself

How to Reinvent Yourself: Getting to Know Yourself

The second area that I wanted to talk about in terms of reinventing yourself and doing a reset is to get you to know yourself.

Get to know yourself.

  • What are the things that you really like?

  • What are the things that you really want?

Paying attention to what's really within you, not what others think or not what you think you should do because of others.

It's an area where you can be really honest about yourself. Take a look at the ways that you feel that you are challenged, and then also the ways that you feel you where you have strengths. Then, take an honest self reflection at all of that to see where you really are right now and really learn more about yourself.

This is such a critical step that I see so often people are really dismissive of. They're looking for change. They're looking to do something different with their life in some way, but they're not willing to look in the mirror. They're not willing to really go deep within themselves to see what they really want, how they may be doing things right now that are not supportive to their future, and then looking at really where they can shift or change something.

If you're someone that's curious and want to try something different, a tool that I love is The Artist's Way journal. So Julia Cameron created this beautiful process and journal to go with it called The Artist's Way. And it's really wonderful in opening you up to discovering more about yourself. So the premise is this journal you write what's called morning pages. And every morning you write three pages of just whatever comes out of your mind. No filter, just brain dumping onto the page, and you kind of release it there. And this act, you do this every day over twelve weeks. And this act in this process of journaling your morning pages allows you to get to know yourself and reconnect you to your own creative process. And, actually, episode 12 was all about creative self expression, and this really goes along with that because it's opening you up more to your inner self. She also talks about artist dates where you pick a day. It could be each week, each month, whatever your frequency, once a quarter. And you go on a date with yourself. You go do something on your own, something you wanted to do, whether it's to go see a show or go to a museum or have a dinner or something and spend some time with yourself doing something that is artistic in some way and can connect you more to your creative drive. It's a really beautiful tool that I recommend to clients all the time. I've used it myself for quite a few years now. I don't write in the morning pages every single day, but in the beginning I did. And now, I write when I feel called to write. You can use it however you'd like, but it's a really, really beautiful tool to do this.

Another area that you can use for exploring and reinventing yourself if Human Design. Human Design is another great tool, and you can really learn a lot about your makeup and how your energy works and work from that. It's a great place to start with self discovery. I tell people this all the time too. I also do human design readings, and they are always unlocking something new for the person that I work with. And quite often for myself too, because I'm on my own journey with what's called deconditioning and coming back to who I really am.

All of these different tools and experiences can really help you to work with that in different ways. And really just, again, following those nudges and listening to your own creative self expression covered in episode 12, it's really a beautiful way to start to see and get to know yourself more deeply.

Please be open to exploring this in some way, getting to know yourself in some way because it really is such a magical part and really, I believe, a critical part of reinventing yourself. You have to know who you are. You have to know where you are right now. And as you learn that, you will start to chip away and discover where it is that you want to go. Don't feel overwhelmed that, oh, you don't know where you want to be in ten years. Your reinvention doesn't have to start with the end goal. It has to start with you being willing to show up and do the work for yourself, and it will be revealed to you over time. It's something that I know can be frustrating. I, myself, get frustrated sometimes with this because I want to know what's next. But when I really step back and say, hey, I'm in this process. I'm here for this journey. Just show me the next step. The next step is always revealed. It's always revealed, and you don't have to try to guess what it's going to be. Because actually, it's not going to work if you try to guess anyway.

That’s the second area for reinventing yourself - getting to know yourself more deeply.

How to Reinvent Yourself: Expanding Your Network and Meeting New People

The third area that I wanted to share with you today about reinventing yourself is around meeting new people. And as you do some of the self discovery from getting to know yourself, you will likely find that you're ready for new relationships. You're ready to meet new people, maybe that have different interests that you are now interested in. And as this takes shape, you'll want to have a network around you that's really supportive to who you're becoming.

A lot of people in our lives, when we start to change, they can get uncomfortable with that. Not everyone, but it's possible. And you really want to make sure that you have the most supportive people around you so that you can be encouraged on this journey in any and every way.

You can start out by seeing:

  • Are there any local, in person, or online communities that share some of the interests that I have?

  • What are some of these new things that I'm really looking forward to doing more or exploring in some way?

  • Are there groups that already talk about these things?

Then, you have people already built in in a specific area coming to meet up in some way to talk about said interest. So if you're getting into playing an instrument and you want to meet other people, you might go to a local musical meetup in some way, or start going to local concerts if you haven't already. Anything that has that shared interest of what you're into. And it could be across any area.

There's something for everyone. I'm out I live outside of a city in France, so there aren't as many local communities, let's say. So some of the communities that I join are online because it's just easier. But I try to really find a mix. A lot of the exercise and movement type classes that I like, I can find things in person. And then online is more for other types of interests and having online friends. So you can find your mix, but really making sure that you're in an environment that supports who you're becoming. And it can feel a little disconcerting because as some of your relationships maybe change or fade away because you realize, oh, we weren't in a mutually supportive agreement or relationship, and it's time for something different, then you'll really want to have people that you can go to.

It may be people that are close to you already, but it may not be. You may see some of that change. I know my friendships and relationships have shifted over time. And even if sometimes it can be really painful in the moment and you feel like, oh, actually, I really want to try to stay in touch over here, but you just also feel it's not working the same way. There's always something beautiful that comes from it because you'll find people that are even more aligned with who you're becoming. So that may resonate for right now. It may not depending on how and where you are right now.

Keep that in mind for your relationships and having supportive people around you, either really physically in person or online in some way in kind of this touchstone that you can go to get support to have these common interests and be with other people that are really forward thinking and into their own development in some way.

If you're listening to this podcast, it's because you are open to doing things differently, and you know that there's more out there for you in some way. In order to keep moving in that direction, you have to find other people that are moving in that direction. Because very often, a lot of the world is not in that same place. And so it's really important to find those people that can be supportive for you in that way.
